Mental Health and Justice

CMHA Peel Dufferin’s Mental Health and Justice Services (MHJS) offers a range of mental health supports to individuals experiencing mental health concerns, who are in conflict with the law and live in the Peel or Dufferin Region. Services include help with navigating the Mental Health and Justice system, individualized community support and advocacy around accessing community resources
Who can benefit?
Anyone 18 years of age or over who is experiencing mental health concerns, charged with a criminal offense and reside in the Peel or Dufferin Region.
What are the major benefits?
- Support for easier navigation through the justice system by connecting individuals with community service providers to address their mental health concerns instead of a punitive sentence
- Helps clients transition back into their home communities after being released on bail or following a completed sentence at an institution.
- Provides mental health support, education and advocacy for individuals and their families and connecting people to the broader community through volunteering, social or recreational activities.
Court Support Services
General assistance with navigating the mental health and justice system. The MHJS team support the Brampton and Orangeville courthouse to coordinate forensic assessment orders. Our court office phone number is: 416-735-2965
Mental Health Diversion
When determined in court, the Brampton and Orangeville Courthouse can refer individuals to CMHA to address their mental health concerns, as an alternative resolution. Assessment, referral and community support is provided to individuals to assist with the completion of mental health diversion. A Crown Attorney referral is required Court Support Referral Form
Release from Custody
Individuals with mental health concerns can receive reintegration support into their home communities once released from custody in court, Maplehurst Correctional Complex, Ontario Correctional Institute or Vanier Centre for Women. Release From Custody Referral Form
Post Court Transitional Support
Intensive community support and access to a housing specialist is provided to individuals whose court matters are complete. This program is in partnership with Services and Housing in the Province (SHIP)
Family Support
Assistance and help with navigating the mental health and justice system is available for loved ones who are clients of MHJS programs.
Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) Diagnostic Clinic
A FASD Nurse coordinator assists individuals in completing assessments needed to determine a diagnosis of FASD. This includes education for individuals, their loved ones/caregivers and other service providers working alongside the person with FASD.
